Background

The home was established in 1967 by a group of men who were heading the Bulawayo City Council. These men formed a trust and bought land from Bulawayo City Council. They had discovered that most people who were destitute were aliens mainly from Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique who had come to Zimbabwe in the 194os to look for work. Currently the institution is being run by a voluntary Board of Trustees and Mrs Catherine Chiponda who is the matron, is a nurse by profession having worked in Britain for more than 20 years. She works on a voluntary basis. The place is dominated by men numbering 40 with only 11 women to add up to 51 though more people can be accommodated. The main challenges faced by the home are lack of adequate food to cater for the inmates as they depend mainly on donations and failure to cater for administrative expenses like paying salaries for their small number of staff and monthly bills for rates, water and electricity. The residents have no pension income and government grants have since stopped.

CBZ Bulawayo CCD decided to pay the home a visit and make a difference to the grannies by donating various groceries to the Home.
